Prenatal Care
During pregnancy the spine and pelvis become stressed and a large percent of all pregnant women experience back discomfort and pain during pregnancy. The growth of the baby causes interferences in the women’s body. Regular chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can relieve and may prevent common discomforts experienced during pregnancy.
Comfort for the Baby
Many ligaments connected to the spine and pelvis supports the uterus. If the spine and pelvis are not properly balanced and aligned then these ligaments create an uneven pull on the uterus. This may cause restrictions to the baby’s position and movement to optimal positioning for delivery. Development can be affected and conditions such as torticollis may arise due to the compromised position of the baby throughout pregnancy. Any baby position even slightly off during birth will slow down labor, and add distress to the mother and baby. This may then lead to dystocia. Dystocia is defined as difficult birth. Every woman would like to avoid this because when dystocia occurs then it is more likely that the mother will have to undergo medical interventions. Inducing labor and the use of pitocin, epidurals, painful episiotomies, forceful pulling on the baby’s head, vacuum extraction, forceps and C-sections are all medical interventions that disable the mother from experiencing a natural safe birth.
Dystocia
According to obstetric texts some reasons for dystocia are:
Uterine forces are not strong or not able to properly dilate the cervix.
Dimensions of the pelvis are not optimal.
Improper position of the baby.
How Chiropractic Can Help
The uterus is a muscle and it needs nerve supply to function properly. Misalignment of the spine and pelvis interferes with proper nerve supply to the uterus. Misalignment also inhibits for optimal space and positioning of the baby.
